Award of the British Empire Medal
to
Sergeant David Lindsay Knight, 23rd September, 1943.
Citation
At 1700 hrs on the 15th April 1943 an enemy aircraft flew low over the harbour position of the Regimental Headquarters and Recce Troop of this Unit near Djebel Nahel. Our own ant-aircraft opened fire and hit a petrol can beside one of the carriers of the Recce Troop which was set on fire. The flames soon enveloped the carrier and this too went on fire.
No. 7015774 Serjeant Knight, D.L. who was keeping wireless watch in another carrier near by, jumped on to the burning carrier and started flinging off the ammunition. Others rushed up with fire extinguishers and attempted to put out the flames. The fire, however, had some hold so Serjeant Knight got into the driver’s seat in spite of large volumes of smoke and flames and drove the carrier out of danger.
But for Serjeant Knight’s prompt and gallant action the carrier would undoubtedly have been lost.
