CITATION FOR U.S.BRONZE STAR

GEORGE. T. MAHON, 277918, Lieutenant, Royal Armored Corps, North Irish Horse, 21st Tank Brigade, British Army, for heroic achievement in connection with military operations in Italy on 24 April 1845. Commanding a troop of tanks of the North Irish Horse, Lieutenant Mahon led his men across the Pontelogoscuro Canal into the city of Ferrara. Throughout the night he fought stubborn enemy resistance, often leaping from his tank to better direct the infantrymen and vehicles. By the next morning Lieutenant Mahon and his men had captured over sixty prisoners, destroyed two machine gun positions and five enemy tanks. By his courageous leadership Lieutenant Mahon’s men were able to make their way through the city and were ready to cross the P0 River, thereby accomplishing their mission and opening a route whereby the Allied units could continue their rapid advance against the swiftly retreating enemy. Entered service from Dublin, Ireland.
