World War Two Awards and Decorations

Award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal
to
Sergeant Thomas Condit McAughtry, 17th January, 1945.

Recommendation
This NCO has been in every action with B Squadron North Irish Horse during the period 1 September - 31 December 1944.

On 22 September he was commanding 2 Troop. He led the successful last night attack on S. Guistina 785966 and his tanks were the first on to Route 9. During the night he remained in the 1 Somerset Light Infantry Forward Defensive Locations and drove off repeated enemy counter attacks. On the 10th his tanks drew exceptionally heavy shelling but Serjeant McAughtry spent the day in and out of his tank liaising with the Infantry Commander and fighting his troop in an exemplary manner until relieved at last light.

On 15 October he was leading tank in a most difficult stream crossing at 603975(W) R. Just short of the far bank he broke a track. Under fire, and up to the waist in water and mud , Serjeant McAughtry, assisted by his crew, repaired the track and got across.

This N.C.O. has proved himself to be an outstanding Troop Leader. Throughout the period he fought consistently well and in the five months continuous fighting (up till 3 December) he has gained much honour and glory for himself and his regiment

Serjeant McAughtry has a splendid fighting record both in N. Africa and Italy and I very strongly recommend him for the DCM
