Lieutenant-Colonel Eugene Vincent Strickland M.M.

Reommendation
For the breaching of the Adolf Hitler line on 23 May 1944, the North Irish Horse Regiment was in support of 2 Canadian Infantry Brigade. The line was strongly organized and firmly held. The nature of terrain and vegetation favours anti-tanks defence and the enemy had taken full advantage of these facts in preparing his positions. Numerous anti-tank weapons, cleverly sited, and minefield disposed in depth, took heavy toll of the North Irish tanks. The Regiment however pressed on, determined to support the infantry who were meeting strong resistance and murderous fire from artillery and mortars.

Lieutenant Colonel Eugene Victor Strickland, the Regiment Commander was almost continuously in the forward areas organizing and inspiring the repeated tank attacks in support of the infantry. When the situation was critical, due to casualties and communication difficulties, Lieutenant Colonel Strickland personally organized a tank force in the forward area to assist the elements of two companies of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada isolated on their objective.

In reorganizing the armour, this officer, on several occasions, found it necessary to dismount from his tank to assist in this forming up.

His personal example of coolness, determination and indifference to heavy enemy fire was an inspiration to both his own men the infantry alike.
