Appointment of Captain Edward James Byrne
as a
Member of the Most Excellent British Order of the British Empire

Citation
Throughout the period of 9 April – 5 May 1945, Captain Byrne was called on at short notice to act as staff officer to a mixed group of units of the Brigade – crocodile, flail Armoured Engineer Squadrons operating under 5 Corps. This task entailed the effecting changes of command, replacement of tank and other essential items of specialist equipment, all vital to the success of the operations and all largely significant to meet daily requirements. That control was successfully and continually maintained, that moves were affected to time, that replacement of tanks and equipment were always forthcoming when required was largely due to his energy, efficiency and initiative, while working long hours in a small improvised tactical HQ.
Captain Byrne served as Senior Liaison Officer to 25 Tank Brigade in North Africa and during the operations in Italy May - December 1944. Throughout these operations his energy and unfailing resources under difficult conditions did much to ensure the efficient control and smooth working of the Brigade.
