Appointment of Major Arthur Ernest William Gaston
as a
Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire
Citation
This officer has commanded the Brigade Headquarter Squadron during the whole of the campaign in North West Europe. In this capacity he has been responsible for the sitting, protection and internal administration of the Brigade Headquarters.
He has always handled the many and varied problems which confronted him with the greatest efficiency and his forethought and unremitting efforts have resulted in a smooth running and admirably organised Brigade Headquarters.
Despite his many other duties, Major Gaston has never overlooked the welfare of the men, and due to his continual and selfless devotion to duty the morale and spirit of the Headquarters has always been maintained at a high level.
During the many occasions when a Tac HQ has been sent forward, this officer personally supervised the taking up of supplies and never once was the Tac without all it needed. On one occasion he took forward urgently needed supplies whilst the road was under extremely heavy and accurate shell fire. He always refused rest or relief until his heavy and responsible tasks were completed.
Major Gaston’s resourcefulness and energy were of the highest order and his perpetual cheerfulness and zest for the job in hand were an inspiration to all ranks.
