Citation
On 11 April, 1943 “B” Squadron the North Irish Horse Horse captured Djebel el Rhar. Enemy were observed in some Arab huts at the Northern end of the feature. Lieutenant Brown’s troop was ordered forward to destroy the Enemy and after a short advance his tank was hit by an anti-tank gun at very short range, and the forward gunner was killed. The tank was hit again several times and it was necessary to evacuate the tank.
Lieutenant ordered evacuation and then crawled some sixty yards to his Squadron Leader’s tank and indicated the ant-tank gun to his Squadron
Leader (who otherwise would NOT have seen it as it was very well concealed) who then destroyed it. Lieutenant Brown then returned and succeeded in getting his tank towed out despite constant small arms fire. During the fixing of the shackles he used his Thompson Sub-machine Gun against the enemy.
: Throughout this action Lieut. Brown displayed marked powers of leadership and by his courage and coolness inspired his crew.
