to
Lieutenant George Edgar Gardiner, 8th May, 1943.

Citation
On the 11th April, 1943, Lieutenant Gardiner’s tank shed a track while attempting to cross the wadi (471468). His tank was at the time under heavy enemy shell and mortar fire.
Lieutenant Gardiner, without hesitation, left the safety of his tank and proceeded to repair his tank. He was immediately wounded in the thigh by a shell fragment but refused to disclose the seriousness of the wound and went on with the operation. He continued to command his troop for some 14 hours until completely exhausted.
His devotion to duty was an inspiration to the men of his troop. He is now in hospital and his wound is more serious than at first thought.
