Award of the Military Cross
to
Liutenant Michael Brownfield Pope, 21st May, 1943.
Citation
On 26 April Lieutenant M.B. Pope commanded the forward right troop of “B” Squadron in the final assault on the Djebel Rhar. During the course of this successful action which finally placed Longstop in our hands, Lieutenant Pope’s troop silenced seven anti-tank guns and captured an 80 m.m. anti-tank gun intact engaging it from the flank.
Over 50 prisoners surrendered to his troop and these he shepherded along for a considerable time before handing them over to the infantry.
Throughout this engagement Lieutenant Brownfield Pope displayed great initiative and resource. He handled his troop with coolness, daring and judgement and his support of the infantry was magnificent. He also displayed great courage when changing tanks under machine-gun fire and his conduct was an example and inspiration to his troop.
