Award of the Military Cross
to
Major Robert Smith Holland Sidebottom, 24th May, 1945.

Citation
At Ferrara on 24 April [1945] Major Sidebottom was in command of B Squadron North Irish Horse. A strong enemy pocket, including many tanks and self-propelled guns was cut off between Ferrara and the Po. Throughout the day tanks of B Squadron had been engaging the enemy tanks across the Pontelogoscuro canal. By last light the squadron sherdozer had made a crossing under heavy fire and Major Sidebottom decided to make a night attack. This attack was planned and led by Major Sidebottom. During the night, B Squadron accounted for six self-propelled guns, one Panther, seven Mk IV’s and captured over 80 prisoners, mostly crews from the AFVS, and completely cleared the pocket.
Major Sidebottom, with two men, entered first on his feet and captured 40 of the prisoners.
Major Sidebottom’s skill and personal courage led to the speedy reduction of this formidable force.

This officer showed fine leadership, determination and courage in this fierce and decisive action. I very strongly support this recommendation.
