Award of the Military Medal
to
Lance-Sergeant Stewart

Citation
Lance-Serjeant Stewart has commanded the Armoured Recovery tank in “C” Squadron during all the Italian operations and has proved himself a competent and fearless commander. On 3 March [1945] during an attack in support of the Cremona Gruppo he carried out three excellent recoveries.
The Squadron Leader’s Tank had blown up on a mine and broken the track. Serjeant Stewart came up in his ARV and, after removing the track under mortar and shell fire regardless of his own safety, he later drove over to another disabled tank which was in a very exposed position, and towed it under cover of a wood and mended its track. The following evening he recovered a third tank from the infantry Forward Defence Locations This incident is one of many during our advance to Florence and to the Gothic Line. His skill and energy have enabled many disabled tanks to be recovered under enemy observation and subsequent shelling.
Serjeant Stewart has shown great devotion to duty, skill and disregard for his own safety at all times and his work has been a source of inspiration, not alone to his crew, but to all the men of his squadron.
