Ogbourne St.George

Situated a few miles north of Marlborough, Wiltshire, this picture-postcard village with its thatched cottages played host to the North Irish Horse.

While most of the NIH used passes to go to either Marlborough or Swindon, many would enjoy a quaff or two at the Old Crown Inn. Some centuries old, this one-time coaching hostelry is one of the few in Britain having a well inside its doors.

With its close proximity to Salisbury Plain, the village was also home to several Armoured Units during the war including, on its arrival in the UK, the US Army's 75th Medical Armored Battalion. Doubtless the GIs downed a pint or two in the Old Crown Inn during their short stay.
