Goodbye Churchills - Hello Greyhounds

From Tracks to Wheels

Extract from War Diary - 22.10.45:
"Instructions received that Regt would convert to Armd Recce Regt and would absorb personnel from 56th Recce Regt (being disbanded).
A Sqn proceeded to Vienna for Garrison Duties and GOC Escort. B & HQ Sqns in Wolfsberg. C Sqn in Santk Andrä." [A small town south of the Yugoslav border].

22.10.45: - Wolfsberg, Austria.
'B' Squadron was called for a meeting with the OC, to be told the NIH had become an Armoured Recce Regiment and was absorbing 56th Recce Regiment which was being disbanded. Additional to 336 personnel, we were to take over most of the Recce's lorries and Greyhound Armoured Cars. When some wag (probably a gunner) called out something to the effect "that means we're going back to those 2-pdr popguns," there were chuckles all around.
